AirCover Won't Pay: Why Claims Get Denied and What to Do (2026)

Key points

AirCover Won't Pay: Why Claims Get Denied and What to Do

Almost always on the evidence, not on the cover limit.

Claims fail on three things: no proof the damage is new, documentation that is too thin, and a missed 14-day deadline. The three largest grounds for refusal are at bottom the same one.

Airbnb Host damage protection

In 60 seconds

1

AirCover for Hosts reimburses up to USD 3m for guest damage. The reason many hosts still get nothing is not the cover limit but the evidence.

2

About half of refusals are down to insufficient documentation, some 20% to normal wear and tear and 13% to pre-existing damage.

3

Those three blocks are at bottom the same problem: you cannot prove what condition the place was in before the stay.

4

A photo after checkout proves a finding exists, not when it arose. Without a dated before-state it is one word against another.

5

Since the April 2026 policy update AI-edited photos are excluded; Airbnb expects verifiable, timestamped documentation.

What Airbnb provides for

Report the damage within 14 days of the responsible guest's checkout or before the next guest checks in, whichever comes first. A reimbursement request goes to the guest through the Resolution Center first; they have 24 hours to respond, and if they do not respond, pay only in part or decline, you escalate to Host damage protection. This is a platform rule, not law.

Paraphrased · Airbnb Host damage protection

Why claims are refused

GroundShare of refusals
Insufficient documentation~50%
Normal wear and tear (not covered)~20%
Pre-existing damage / not provably new~13%
Photos do not meet the format requirements~10%
Outside the scope of cover~7%

What sound evidence has to contain

A timestamp recording when the image existed, not a changeable file date. Before and after of the same area, so the comparison is possible. Tamper-evidence, a seal that makes any later editing visible. And proof of amount: a repair quote, an invoice or an estimate. A loose phone photo reliably satisfies none of these four.

The reporting process is in Reporting damage to AirCover, the technical side in Proving damage in a holiday let.

Common mistakes

Having only the after-state

The guest says the mark was there before, and without a dated before-state Airbnb decides against the host in case of doubt, because the doubt is what is documented.

Relying on the file date

A file date can be changed and is not a timestamp.

Losing the deadline before it runs

With no documented condition between two bookings, attribution is gone the moment the next guest checks in, long before the 14 days expire.

What to do next

1

Scan the empty place at every changeover, that one scan closes the departing guest's stay and becomes the baseline for the next. Do it with BildProof, about two minutes a room

2

When damage occurs, record the condition before anything is cleaned or repaired.

3

File the reimbursement request within 14 days, with evidence of cost.

4

If the guest declines or stays silent, escalate to Host damage protection.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Airbnb deny my AirCover claim?

The most common reasons are insufficient documentation (about half of all denials), normal wear and tear that isn't covered, and no proof the damage was new rather than pre-existing. On top of that come photos that don't meet Airbnb's format rules and missed deadlines. Almost every case is missing the same piece: solid evidence of the property's condition before the booking.

How do I prove damage happened during a specific stay?

Only with a before-and-after record. You need a dated, tamper-evident capture of the condition before the stay and one after it. Only the comparison shows a finding is new. Without the before state it's one word against another, and the guest claims the damage was already there.

What is the deadline for AirCover damage claims?

You must report the damage within 14 days of the responsible guest's checkout or before your next guest checks in, whichever comes first. First you file a reimbursement request to the guest in the Airbnb Resolution Center; if they don't respond within 24 hours, pay partially, or decline, you escalate to Host damage protection. Missing the deadline is the single most common reason claims are denied.

Are photos I take after checkout enough on their own?

Not by themselves. A photo after checkout shows damage exists, not when it appeared. Since Airbnb's April 2026 policy update, claims require verifiable, non-AI-edited documentation with timestamps and a before-and-after comparison. A sealed record whose originals are provably unaltered meets that bar; a loose phone photo often doesn't.

Does AirCover cover normal wear and tear?

No. Everyday marks, light scratches, worn patches, faded paint, are explicitly excluded. That's why the line between wear and real damage matters so much, and why the claim that wins is the one that can show a finding wasn't there before the stay.
