AI-edited photos: why your Airbnb claim fails on them
AI-edited photos: why your Airbnb claim fails on them
AI-generated, AI-enhanced and upscaled images have been excluded from Airbnb damage claims since April 2026. Even automatic optimisation can cost you the claim.
The risk sits with honest hosts, not forgers: many phones sharpen, brighten and denoise automatically. What comes out is, strictly speaking, an altered image.
Airbnb Host Damage Protection Terms, April 2026 versionIn 60 seconds
Since April 2026 Airbnb excludes AI-generated, AI-enhanced and upscaled images as evidence. One such image can devalue an entire claim.
This is not only about deliberate manipulation. Automatic enhancement, denoising and upscaling by your camera app fall under the same rule.
Always submit the original file. Avoid cropping, rotating, brightening and filters, even where they would make the damage easier to see.
A screenshot of a photo is not an original file either and should not be submitted.
You are safe if your captures are provably unaltered: a seal over the original bytes makes any later edit visible, which demonstrates exactly what Airbnb asks for.
What Airbnb requires
Evidence must be true and not falsified. AI-generated, AI-enhanced or upscaled images and documents do not count as admissible evidence. This is a platform rule, not law.
What still counts as evidence
| No longer admissible | Safe |
|---|---|
| AI-generated or AI-enhanced images | unedited original file |
| upscaled captures | capture at original resolution |
| screenshot of a photo | the file itself |
| brightened or filtered afterwards | unaltered, with a timestamp |
What else the update changed is in Airbnb evidence rules 2026; why loose photos rarely suffice anyway is in Photos as damage evidence.
Common mistakes
Well meant, and risky since April 2026. Upload the original file.
A screen capture is not an original photo and carries none of the original data.
Many phones enhance automatically. Check whether you can switch those features off.
What to do next
Switch off automatic image enhancement in your camera app where possible. Do it with BildProof, about two minutes a room →
Capture the condition at every guest turnover as an unedited image.
In a claim, submit original files only.
Frequently asked questions
Does this apply to my phone's automatic processing?
On the wording, yes. The rule names AI-generated, AI-enhanced and upscaled images, and that is exactly what many camera apps do automatically on save. Switch those features off where you can, and always submit the original file.
Can I crop a photo so the damage is easier to see?
Better not. Any change to the file makes it arguable that this is no longer the unaltered original. Upload the full image and describe in the text what to look at.
How do I prove my photo is unedited?
By sealing the capture at the moment it is taken. A seal over the original bytes makes any later change visible, and an independent timestamp establishes when it was taken. Together they demonstrate exactly what Airbnb asks for.
